Pollution Prevention Week: September 21 - 27 2009

mercury thermometerMercury Thermometer Exchange Program
Public Will Receive Free Digital Thermometers to Replace Old Ones
As part of its observance of Sept. 21-27 as Pollution Prevention Week, the Novato Sanitary District will conduct a free mercury thermometer exchange program.

Mercury thermometers will be exchanged for digital thermometers free of charge on Tuesday, September 22, at the Novato Farmers Market on Grant Avenue, between Machin and Reichert, 4-8 p.m., and on Sunday, September 27, and Monday, September 28, at the Novato Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 7576 Redwood Blvd., 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

The intent of the program is to help prevent toxic waste that poses a threat to public health and the environment from entering the wastewater and storm water flows. The public is invited to bring in old mercury thermometers that contain harmful chemicals and exchange them for modern digital thermometers that are actually easier to use, are more accurate and contain no toxic chemicals.  And it’s free!

For more information, call the Household Hazardous Waste Hotline at
415-892-7344 or the Novato Sanitary District Office at 415-892-1694.
