Mandatory Commercial Recycling for Businesses & Multi-Family Dwellings

Beginning July 1, 2012, all businesses and public entities in the State of California that generate four cubic yards or more of waste per week and multi-family units of five or more are required to recycle.

This new business and mult-family recycling requirement results from the passage of AB341, (Title 14, Division 7, Chapter 9.1), whose purpose is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by diverting commercial solid waste to recycling and expanding opportunities for additional recycling services and facilities in California.

Who Is Required to Comply?

  • All commercial accounts, including businesses, schools, and other institutions that generate 4 or more cubic yards of waste per week. (One cubic yard is approximately equal to seven, 32 gallon size carts)
  • All multifamily apartment buildings with five or more units

How Do I Comply?

Separate your recyclables from your regular solid waste and:

  • Subscribe to Novato Disposal Service to collect your recyclable
    materials, or
  • Self haul your recyclables to a recycling center
