Pollution Prevention Events
The Novato Sanitary District conducts extensive public outreach to spread the word about the value of pollution prevention to protect the environment. Here are some examples:
Wetlands Days – The District assists the Sewage Agency of Southern Marin in the staging of the annual Wetlands Days, which is very popular and highly educational.
Pharmaceutical Take-Back – The District regularly educates the public about the proper disposal of unused pharmaceuticals and facilitates the proper disposal. Support is given to the Marin County Environmental Health Pharmaceutical Take-Back Program, including financial contributions.
Outreach Booths – Public education is provided at booths staffed by District personnel at many community events, among them the Marin County Fair, BAEER Fair, Canal Community Alliance Fair, Farmers Markets in San Rafael and Novato, Fairfax Ecofest, Kaiser Hospital Earth Day Event, City of San Rafael Earth Day Event, Senior Information Fair, North Bay Watershed Association Annual Conference and San Marin High and Novato High Schools Earth Day Events.
Mercury Collection – Ongoing programs are conducted to encourage and facilitate the collection of batteries and fluorescent tubes. Upcoming programs will focus on additional efforts to collect products containing mercury.
Copper Outreach – Steps are taken to identify sources of copper pollution, including school audits and presentations, to provide public education about pool and spa chemicals and to facilitate e-waste collection.
