Household Hazardous Waste Facility

The Novato community is fortunate to be able to use a permanent drop-off facility for household and small business hazardous waste.

The facility is open from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM on the first and third Sundays and Mondays of each month, and is located to the rear of the Novato Recycling Center at 7576 Redwood Blvd.

What to Bring to the Facility:

Many products that are easily purchased at local stores are considered hazardous and require special handling when using or disposing of them. Products labeled "DANGER", "POISON", "CAUTION", "WARNING", "TOXIC", "FLAMMABLE", or "CORROSIVE" are considered hazardous and require special handling.

Some examples of hazardous waste that are accepted at the facility include:

  • Automotive Products - brake fluid, transmission fluid, old gasoline (with container), waxes, and polishes.

  • Household Cleaners - ammonia, bleach, disinfectants, floor and furniture polishes, tub, tile and toilet bowl cleaners, oven and drain cleaners, spot removers, metal cleaners, rug cleaners

  • Paint and Building Products - oil-base paint, paint thinners and removers, spray paints, wood preservatives and stains, turpentine, cements and sealers, solvents

  • Lawn and Garden Products - pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, ant and roach baits, snail and slug baits

  • Miscellaneous - pool chemicals, photographic chemicals, flea products, moth crystals, small amount of asbestos, small propane tanks from barbecues or camp stoves, cathode ray tubes (TV's and computer monitors)

What NOT to bring:

The following items are NOT accepted:

  • Explosives or ammunition. Call your local police

  • Asbestos in large amounts. Limit is 2 trashbags (30 gallon size)

  • Radioactive waste.

  • Medical or biological waste. Call the County Health Department.

  • Business or commercial waste. Call the Novato Business Hotline at 892-6395.

Transport Tips:

  • Do not transport more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds

  • Bring your waste in its original container

  • Do not mix wastes together

  • Transport waste in car trunk or truck bed, away from passengers or pets

  • Make sure containers are NOT leaking and are packed to prevent spills

Fluorescent light tubes
and compact bulbs

The energy crisis has seen a definite increase in the use of fluorescent lighting for energy savings!

Once these lights burn out, they should be recycled at the Recycling Center, located at 7576 Redwood Blvd. (next to Shamrock Materials), during the hours of 10am to 4pm Tuesday - Sunday.

Fluorescent tubes and bulbs also contain mercury and so care should be taken to avoid breaking them.
